Summer 2014 - Geese by Alfred Sisley

Pastel 1897

Alfred Sisley (/ˈsɪsli/; French: [sislɛ]; 30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. He was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape en plein air (i.e., outdoors). He deviated into figure painting only rarely and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, found that Impressionism fulfilled his artistic needs.

Sorry for the lack of postings these past few months!  Let's work on this painting by Alfred Sisley for this summer, we will have until the beginning of September.  Happy Painting!

March Study - The Sunflowers by George Braque

Georges Braque was born on 13 May 1882 in Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise. He grew up in Le Havre and trained to be a house painter and decorator like his father and grandfather. However, he also studied artistic painting during evenings at the École des Beaux-Arts, in Le Havre, from about 1897 to 1899. In Paris, he apprenticed with a decorator and was awarded his certificate in 1902. The next year, he attended the Académie Humbert, also in Paris, and painted there until 1904.

This month's painting was suggested by Azra Iqbal!  Have fun painting!

January Study - House and Farm at Jas de Bouffan by Paul Cezanne

1885-1887
Oil on Canvas, 60x73cm
Prague, National Gallery

"In September 1859 Paul Cézanne’s father bought a large country house and farm, called the Jas de Bouffan, just outside Aix-en-Provence. For the next forty years, this estate, which included a large 18th-century house, alleys of chestnut trees, and views of Mont Sainte-Victoire (another of the artist’s favorite sites), afforded Cézanne with many of his subjects. No fewer than thirty-seven oils and sixteen watercolors of the Jas de Bouffan and its immediate environment have been catalogued." http://www.guggenheim.org/new-york/collections/collection-online/artwork/783

Let's start the year with a painting from one of my favorites!  I love the colors in this one, definite reminder of Provence!

November/December Study - Madame Edouard Pailleron by John Singer Sargent

Madame Edouard Pailleron
John Singer Sargent -- American painter
1879

Oil on canvas
208.3 x 100.4 cm (82 x 39 1/2 in.)
Gallery Fund and Gifts of Katherine McCook Knox,

Information from http://www.jssgallery.org/paintings/Madame_Edouard_Pailleron.htmhttp://www.jssgallery.org/paintings/Madame_Edouard_Pailleron.htm:
This is Sargent's first full length portrait. Notice the change of focus of the grass around her face compared to the trees and stone railing of the Madame Pailleron's parents country estate at Ronjoux, Chambéry, Savoy in the south of France where this was painted.
In 1880 Sargent showed this painting along with the subject painting Fumée d'Ambre Gris at the Paris salon.
The autumn setting with the yellow fallen leafs and wild flowers gives this a more unusual look for this formal portrait. Sargent had been lucky in patrons. The Paillerons were open to a more artistic interpretation of portraiture. The sitter was born born Marie Buloz (1840-1913). Her father was the editor of the journal Revue des Deux Mondes and her husband was a successful  dramatist and poet. Still, this wasn't that far out of the vogue of the time.

Sorry for the delay in this month's master painting!  Since the next couple of months will be busy with the holidays, we'll make this challenge for November and December.  Have fun!

Took longer than expected but better late than never!  Here's my rendition of Madame Edouard Pailleron, I kept it simple with not too many details.

October Study - The Lacemaker by Johannes Vermeer

The Lacemaker is a painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), completed around 1669–1670 and held in the Louvre, Paris. The work shows a young woman dressed in a yellow shawl, holding up a pair of bobbins in her left hand as she carefully places a pin in the pillow on which she is making her bobbin lace. At 24.5 cm x 21 cm (9.6 in x 8.3 in), the work is the smallest of Vermeer's paintings,[1] but in many ways one of his most abstract and unusual.

I have to do 8 master sketches for art school and this is one of the ones I picked.  I thought it would be a great idea to combine my school work and the Painting from the Masters blog!  The only restriction for my master sketches is the painting needs to have been done before 1900.  Vermeer is one of my favorite painters and I think this one is beautiful.  The sketch just needs to capture the colors/values, no need to put all the details, I hope some of you will join me in completing it!

September Study - The Cliffs at Etretat by Claude Monet

Claude Monet
French (1840-1926)
1885
Oil on canvas

Sorry for the late posting for the September study!  Kids have been back in school for a whole week so there's no really good excuse except that it was a busy week!

Here's a little bit of background about this month's master painting:
During the 1860s, '70s, and '80s the village of Etretat on the Normandy coast became an increasingly fashionable vacation spot for families from Paris and other cities in Northern France. Painters such as Gustave Courbet and Giovanni Boldini helped to encourage the popularity of the place, recording the spectacular shapes of the cliffs and the changeable weather conditions of the English Channel. In Monet's painting, the cliffs rise out of the water -- half in cool shadow, half in warm, bright sunlight -- dwarfing the tiny boats with their orange sails, which glide between and around them. Unlike Boldini, who uses the cliffs as the background for a picturesque image of locals and tourists crowding around a fishing boat in Return of the Fishing Boats, Etretat, Monet focuses his attention -- and ours -- on the light that reflects off the constantly shifting surface of the water and the solid, craggy faces of the monolithic rocks.

Hi everyone!  Please humor me this month, it's my birthday month!  This has to be one of my favorite paintings of all times...
Do your best and if you have trouble with the face, just keep it blank and do the rest.  It's meant to be a fun exercise, not a chore!  Have fun with it!

May Study - Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer by Vincent Van Gogh

For this month, let's study a painting from Vincent Van Gogh.

When Van Gogh lived in Arles, he took a trip to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean sea, where he made several paintings of the seascape and town.

Enjoy!

April Study - The Bathers by Pierre-Auguste Renoir - 1887

Oil on canvas, 46 x 67 in the Philadelphia Museum of Art

This month's study has been suggested by Rochelle Cathey as she stated that she liked its collage of classical human form with the impressionistic background. She also mentioned that it took Renoir 3 years to complete! Well...we have 3 weeks, let's see what we can do! Enjoy and have fun!

Our first entry this month is from Renate Arends from the Netherlands after working on it for 28 hours! A great job too!
